If you are not familiar with VOIP (Voice
Over IP) Internet phone service, please read this overview
of the technology and how it works for you.
First, every time you connect to the Internet your computer
is given an IP address (ex: 127.0.0.0). An IP address is four
numbers between 0-256 separated by periods. Voice Over IP
takes that address and routes a telephone number to it.
One of the best features a VOIP provider can offer you is
the ability to choose a local phone number almost anywhere
in the country. If you live in Danmark for business and want
to have a cheap long distance phone plan to call back to Canada
or the United States then you can purchase a local phone number
in your hometown! Your friends and family can call you locally
with only seven number (ex: 555-1234) and it will ring to
your Internet phone in Danmark! The long distance rates are
cheap because VOIP service is not run by the monopolizing
telecommunication companies.
